Meanwhile, around the NHL

  1. One has to feel for Matt Murray. He was looking good and played well through the early season, but his body just isn’t cooperating. Having played only 24 games last year, he was placed on LTIR by the Toronto Maple Leafs yesterday after just one game played. Here’s hoping things go better for him on his return so he can get back on track.
  2. Former Leafs goalie Jake Campbell didn’t have it easy on Saturday night when he got chased in the first battle of Alberta, but it was hardly his fault. The number of times his defensemen were overwhelmed near the net and gave up odd man, high scoring opportunities would have gotten anyone chased from the game. The Flames just dominated, and the Oilers took 30 minutes to find themselves. Thats far too long against a Stanley Cup favorite
  3. Darryl Sutter really has the Flames playing well. Even he is impressed, and he is never impressed.
  4. Thank goodness the NHL has exonerated Ian Cole. Thats a piece of good news for the player and the team.
  5. The Tampa Bay Lightning are off to a rocky start.. The latest drubbing at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins must not sit well with them. The Stanley Cup is not won in week one, but it can be lost there.
  6. Arber Xhakej just gave Zach Kassian a buffet of knuckle sandwiches. He is making a name for himself quickly as a force to be reckoned with.
  7. I didn’t see the Arizona Coyotes having one of the top three powerplays in the NHL at any period this season. Did anyone?
  8. The Habs made short work of the Coyotes. Maybe Steve Dangle should start cheering for the Habs instead.
  9. Someone might want to tell the Toronto Maple Leafs forward group, who as far as I can tell are a bunch of whiny sycophants, that no-one is going to hand them the Stanley Cup. Put up or shut up.
  10. I thought that Sheldon Keefe was far too careful with his words. He could have, and should have, been much more forward about his underperforming team of crybabies. They have won precisely nothing. If the players want respect they have to earn it by going deep into the playoffs. THATS what NHL reality is. A closed door meeting to complain about what daddy said last night on TV is not the reality of the situation. Give your head a shake.
  11. Today is the first game for Jonathan Drouin where he looked more like himself. He is having a good night, and he needs a whole season of good nights.
  12. Nick Suzuki did his best Pavel Datsyuk impression tonite: https://twitter.com/AlexMicheletti/status/1583259470280675328?s=20&t=6zISnz24WEqH9uRvSAkk-w
  13. The Colorado Avalanche are looking great on the powerplay, scoring at a 53% rate. Thats absolutely wild. What a shame they are giving up goals on 50% of their powerplays.
  14. The Leafs beat the Stars tonite, but not before Kyle Dubas was seen swearing up a storm on live TV. I can’t blame him. He has assembled the best team on paper he possibly can, and they are letting him down big time.
  15. The Ottawa Senators will be fine, but they are at best a bubble team to make the playoffs. Its a deep division, and they can’t beat Toronto and Buffalo.
  16. Buffalo Sabres fans should drink it in. They beat the Senators and Oilers, and are up on the Flames 3 – 1. Winning three of four to start the season would be a sweet reward for the long suffering fan base.
